Lionel Messi is an Argentine sports superstar and is regarded as the best football player of all time. But this does not excuse Messi from having to pay for violating the law.
Lionel and his father have to stand trial as ruled by the court in Spain. The judge handling the case did not grant the request of the lawyers to have the tax fraud charges renounced. Lionel and his father Jorge, have to face the consequence of their alleged involvement in defrauding Spain of about €4 million. The two have denied the allegations.
The lawyers for the plaintiff have stated that the Messis should be sentenced to 22 months imprisonment. According to the prosecutors, Jorge found a way not to pay Lionel's taxes by means of using companies stationed in foreign lands like Belize and Uruguay. The lawyers of the Messis said in an interview that the football player failed to spend time to thoroughly check his contracts. This excuse was thrown out by the Barcelona high court. It ruled that Lionel should not be given immunity despite his claim that he did not know what was going on with his finances, which his father manages.
Lionel's tax fraud case was set for trial on May 31 to June 3. It's also the beginning of the centennial Copa America in the United States, which Lionel might miss.
